The world we live today is not the safe world that our parents and grand parents lived in. While it is true that they faced wars and the nuclear weapons race, the day to day life was easier and safer.
I remember that I used to walk to school and back by myself. And many of my schoolmates had to take public transportation. No one ever had a problem with that. No one got stolen, mugged, or kidnapped. At most, we were bullied or we bullied other kids. I know it sounds harsh today but in those times it was pretty common. And I would even say that it was better than having drug dealers and shoot outs in schools like it happens today.
